The Axarquia (name comes from the Arabic for east of Malaga ) region of Andalucia, south of Spain is spectacularly beautiful and is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains of the Sierra Tejeda and province of Granada to the North and East.  Most of the area is natural and rugged and boasts an abundance of wild flora and fauna (including the rare Spanish mountain goat) making it perfect walking territory.  It is also ideal for bird watching, horse riding, rock climbing, fishing, golf and exploring with lots of sites to visit, numerous “rutas” which are designated, scenic routes through the countryside and of course, a huge selection of “ventas” where you can stop to relax, enjoy the scenery and sample the local cuisine. The scenery that this particular area has to offer is breathtaking and boasts vast mountain ranges, The highest of the mountains, in the northeast of the area, is La Maroma which reaches an altitude of 2,080 metres and is snow-capped in the winter in contrast to sunbathers on the beaches below.open country side, typical Moorish white washed pueblos, hidden valleys and of course, the outstanding natural beauty. The terrain here is very fertile and produces large amounts of olive, almond, grape, lemon, orange, mango, avocado plus many additional fruits and vegetables. All of this added to the fantastic climate that the south of Spain provides all year round. There are many undeveloped villages and towns in the inland regions and some remain on the coast. Mules are still used as a means of transport and bullocks can be seen ploughing the fields. At the same time the larger coastal resorts provide nightlife until the sun rises and all facilities the resident or visitor might desire. It is a land of gaiety, colour, fiestas and natural produce from the sea and land providing a healthy, fun and economic lifestyle. The Axarquia region is ideally situated within a 30minute – 45minute drive to the Costa del Sol coastline, Mediterranean beaches & golf courses, Malaga city centre and Malaga international airport. The historical city of Granada , famous for the Alhambra Palace and the Sierra Nevada ski resort (which is one of the highest skiing facilities in Europe ) are also within a 1 hour 30 minute – 2 hour drive.
